12 November 2010
The pile driver has left the site and drainage is now going in as part of the work on the foundations. Helen, Andy Dines (Atkins) and Colin Howarth (LA) visited Radcliffe High last Tuesday. It is important to keep part of the old school as it has such a history and is such a lasting part of the story of education in Radcliffe, not least because quite a few of the Millwood staff attended Radcliffe High. It is planned that one of the coats of arms from above the entrance will be salvaged for incorporation into the new school.
Staff were able to see a fantastic new tracking and hoist system on Friday 12 November in school. It is a Swedish design which is used across Sweden and has been used by a large organisation in the UK for a number of years, and is also installed in a growing number of homes.

April 2010 - ‘As a result of a tender process review and to ensure a consistent basis for evaluation, the tender process has been extended, the Council is now aiming to have the tenders returned and evaluated by mid June. It is hoped that by reducing the period set aside for the construction, any delays to the completion of the building can be minimised.’

In June 2008, I wrote to you saying that we had been allocated funding for a NEW SCHOOL. This is great news for the pupils and families in Bury who have children with special educational needs.
Since then, we have
- held a public consultation for Radcliffe community
- Set up a steering group – chair, John Cleaver – see below
- Met regularly as a steering group to keep the project on track – in conjunction with the LA architect and the head of strategic planning
- Worked with Atkins architects to create a design brief according to DCSF Building Bulletin 102
- Collaborated with agencies in the local authority who are key stakeholders, for example, the Primary Care Trust, social care, the SEN team
- Worked closely with our project manager
- Invited parents to a Consultation event for the new school – 30 June 2009
- Consulted all staff who work at Millwood school
- Enabled all education staff and some PCT staff to visit other newly-built special schools throughout the country including Fairfield School, Batley, Castle Hill Special School, Huddersfield, St Luke’s Special School, Scunthorpe, Forest Way Special School, Coalville, Leicestershire, Greenfold School, Bolton, The Orchard School, Sandwell, Brimingham
The proposed site – Radcliffe West site (old Radcliffe High School) of Radcliffe Riverside High School – is the subject of a feasibility study to see if it would be suitable for the new school build.
